General Information

We are excited to announce that this year’s Saturday matinee production of The Nutcracker, performed by the Dallas Repertoire Ballet, will be specifically adapted to provide an optimal experience for those with sensory processing disorders and autism.  The show will premiere December 8, 2018 at 2:00 pm.  This show is designed to soften the sensory experience and increase accessibility for the whole family to enjoy together.

What makes this performance unique…

  • Peruse or download the Social Story on our website to prepare audience members for what to expect during the performance. Download visual cue cards to familiarize yourself with what the volunteers and staff will use to prompt and cue as needed throughout the performance
  • Seek assistance with support staff from volunteer students in Texas Women’s University Department of Occupational Therapy
  • Feel confident in the coaching of ushers and performers on what to expect and how to respond
  • Stop by the activity table an hour before show-time to complete a fun craft, and check out the sensory board where you can touch, feel, and manipulate the props and costume material
  • Enjoy a more relaxed performance that allows for the entrance and exit of individuals as needed. All audience members are released from the traditional expectations and demands of sitting still and staying silent. Anyone who needs a break from the performance can watch from the monitors in the lobby or go to the sensory room
  • Experience a sensory-friendly performance where:
    • Service animals are welcome
    • Additional wheelchair seating is available
    • House lights are lifted a few levels so the theater is not totally dark
    • Stage lights and sound levels are adjusted
    • An interactive free zone is created to free space between the stage and the audience
    • Snacks, toys, and items that help soothe and focus are allowed in the theater
